Reading the Bible Well

8:45am in Fellowship Hall

Taught by Karen Jobes on Zoom

For many Christians the Bible is a familiar book.  But familiarity can obscure some important considerations to keep in mind when understanding what we read.  The Bible is the word of God, but it’s also an ancient artifact written by many authors over a vast period of time, in three languages, to people who lived in vastly different cultures and times from our own.  To help us become better Bible readers, this class will present issues from the world behind the biblical text (historical setting), the world of the biblical text (literary features), and the world in front of the biblical text (application).

Karen has been a member of OEPC since 2017, has served on Session, and holds a PhD from Westminster Theological Seminary (1995) in Biblical Hermeneutics.

The Ten Commandments in the Shorter Catechism

8:45am in Fellowship Hall

Taught by Roger Spence

The Ten Commandments are a timeless guideline for godly living, as well as a schoolmaster to lead us to Christ, as relevant today as they were in Moses' time. Our spiritual forefathers in the Westminster Assembly rendered a valuable service by showing us how they are not dull and dry rules and regulations, but a dynamic blueprint for living a godly life, even today, just as they show us our need for Jesus Christ and His Spirit as we seek to live in a way that honors our heavenly Father, and as we grow in our Christian witness and testimony.

Rev. Roger Spence has worked in pastoral ministry for 45 years, most recently as Transitional Pastor at Deerfield EPC in Bridgeton, NJ.  He and Marilyn are familiar faces at OEPC.
